Chatham athletes Branton Schinkelshoek and the U13 Cyclones have made their mark in Europe, bringing home impressive medals and striking gold in their respective competitions.
Schinkelshoek, a talented young athlete from Chatham, recently competed in the European Youth Olympic Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan. Representing Canada in the 800m race, Schinkelshoek put on an impressive performance, earning himself a bronze medal in the event.
The 15-year-old runner, who trains with the Chatham-Kent Secondary School track team, faced tough competition from athletes across Europe. However, his determination and hard work paid off as he crossed the finish line with a time of 1:53.85, securing his spot on the podium.
Meanwhile, the U13 Cyclones, a local youth soccer team, traveled to Europe to compete in the prestigious Gothia Cup in Sweden. The team, made up of players from Chatham and surrounding areas, put on a stellar performance throughout the tournament, ultimately winning the gold medal in their division.
The Gothia Cup, known as the world’s largest youth soccer tournament, attracts teams from all over the globe. The U13 Cyclones faced tough competition from teams across Europe, but their skill and teamwork led them to victory.
