Newfoundland and Labrador has always been known for its warm and welcoming community. And now, musicians in the province are using their creative talents to help newcomers feel at home.
With an increasing number of immigrants and refugees settling in Newfoundland and Labrador, local musicians have taken it upon themselves to use their music as a way to connect with and support these new members of the community.
One such musician is Mark Bragg, who has been organizing a series of concerts called “Songs of Immigration” in St. John’s. These concerts feature musicians from different cultural backgrounds, sharing their stories and music with the audience.
Bragg believes that music has the power to break down barriers and bring people together. He says, “Music is a universal language that can transcend cultural differences and create a sense of belonging for newcomers.”
Another musician, Rozalind MacPhail, has been using her skills as a flutist and composer to collaborate with newcomers and create music that reflects their experiences. She has worked with Syrian refugees to create a song called “Hope in the Heart of Winter” and with a group of African women to create a song called “We Are One.”
MacPhail says, “Music is a powerful tool for self-expression and healing. By working with newcomers, we are not only creating beautiful music, but also building a sense of community and understanding.”
These initiatives have not only helped newcomers feel more at home in Newfoundland and Labrador, but also provided them with opportunities to showcase their talents and share their culture with the wider community.
In addition to these concerts and collaborations, local musicians have also been offering music lessons to newcomers, providing them with a creative outlet and a chance to learn a new skill.
The efforts of these musicians have not gone unnoticed. The Association for New Canadians, a non-profit organization that supports newcomers in the province, has recognized their contributions and has been working closely with them to further promote diversity and inclusion through music.
As Newfoundland and Labrador continues to welcome more newcomers, it is heartening to see the community coming together through the power of music. These creative approaches not only help newcomers feel at home, but also showcase the province’s strong sense of community and acceptance.
