Heat warnings issued for Edmonton, Calgary and other parts of Alberta

Alberta is facing a scorching start to the summer as heat warnings have been issued for the entire province. The warnings, issued by Environment Canada, are in effect for Calgary, Edmonton, and all surrounding areas.

According to the weather agency, temperatures are expected to reach the high 30s and low 40s in the coming days, with overnight lows remaining in the mid to high teens. This extreme heat is expected to last until at least the end of the week.

In Calgary, the heat warning is in effect for the city and surrounding areas, including Airdrie, Cochrane, and Okotoks. In Edmonton, the warning covers the city and surrounding areas, including St. Albert and Sherwood Park.

The heat warning is a result of a high-pressure system that is bringing hot and dry air from the United States into Alberta. This system is expected to remain in place for the next few days, causing temperatures to soar.

Environment Canada is reminding residents to take precautions during this heat wave. This includes staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and checking on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and young children.

In addition, the agency is warning against leaving pets or children in parked vehicles, as temperatures inside a car can quickly become dangerous in hot weather.

The heat warning also serves as a reminder to be mindful of fire safety. With the hot and dry conditions, the risk of wildfires is increased. Residents are urged to be cautious when using outdoor fires and to follow all fire bans and restrictions in their area.

This is not the first time Alberta has experienced extreme heat in June. In 2019, the province saw record-breaking temperatures, with some areas reaching over 40 degrees Celsius.

As the heat wave continues, residents are advised to stay informed and follow all safety precautions to stay safe and healthy. Environment Canada will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
