Health Canada has issued a recall for certain pregnancy multivitamins due to potential contamination with a harmful bacteria.

The affected products, which were distributed by Materna and PregVit, were found to contain the bacteria Cronobacter spp. This bacteria can cause serious infections, particularly in newborns and those with weakened immune systems.

The recall includes Materna and PregVit products with the lot number 0086 and expiry date of 2022-11. These products were sold across Canada and can be identified by the lot number and expiry date on the packaging.

Health Canada is advising consumers to stop using these products immediately and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Pregnant women who have taken these multivitamins should consult with their healthcare provider.

The recall was initiated after a routine inspection by Health Canada found the presence of Cronobacter spp. in the affected products. The agency is working with the manufacturers to investigate the source of the contamination and prevent future incidents.

Cronobacter spp. can cause serious infections such as meningitis, sepsis, and necrotizing enterocolitis. Symptoms may include fever, irritability, lethargy, poor feeding, and seizures. In severe cases, it can lead to death.

Health Canada is reminding consumers to always check the lot number and expiry date on their products and to report any adverse reactions to Health Canada or the manufacturer.
