Firefighters Respond to Fire in St. Boniface Industrial Area
Emergency crews were dispatched to a fire in the St. Boniface Industrial Area on Tuesday evening.
The blaze broke out at a commercial building on Messager Street, near the intersection of Marion Street and Archibald Street.
According to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, multiple 911 calls were received around 6:30 p.m. reporting heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.
Upon arrival, firefighters quickly worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures. The building was believed to be unoccupied at the time of the fire.
Crews were able to bring the fire under control within an hour, but remained on scene for several hours to ensure that all hot spots were extinguished.
No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The industrial area was temporarily closed off to traffic while crews worked to contain the fire, causing some delays for commuters.
Residents in the area were advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to the heavy smoke in the area.
This is not the first time that a fire has occurred in the St. Boniface Industrial Area. In 2019, a massive blaze broke out at a recycling plant, causing significant damage and forcing nearby residents to evacuate their homes.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service reminds the public to always be cautious and aware of potential fire hazards, especially in industrial areas where there may be a higher risk of fires due to the presence of flammable materials.
They also urge residents to have working smoke alarms in their homes and to have a fire escape plan in case of emergencies.
As for the Messager Street fire, the investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as it becomes available. In the meantime, the industrial area has been reopened to traffic and residents can resume their normal activities.
