Current Vancouver city councillor wins B.C. NDP nomination

Vancouver City Councillor, Sarah Kirby-Yung, has secured the British Columbia NDP nomination for the upcoming provincial election.

Kirby-Yung, who has been serving as a city councillor since 2018, was chosen by party members in a virtual nomination meeting on Sunday. She will now represent the NDP in the Vancouver-Langara riding.

In her acceptance speech, Kirby-Yung expressed her gratitude for the support and trust of the party members. She also highlighted her experience as a city councillor and her commitment to serving the community.

“I am honored to have been chosen as the NDP candidate for Vancouver-Langara,” Kirby-Yung said. “I am committed to working hard for the people of this riding and bringing their voices to the provincial level.”

Kirby-Yung’s nomination comes after the current MLA for Vancouver-Langara, Michael Lee, announced he would not be seeking re-election. Lee, who has held the seat since 2017, congratulated Kirby-Yung on her nomination and expressed his confidence in her ability to represent the riding.

The BC NDP leader, Premier John Horgan, also congratulated Kirby-Yung on her nomination, stating that she will be a strong addition to the party’s team.

“Sarah Kirby-Yung is a dedicated public servant and I am thrilled to have her as part of our team,” Horgan said. “Her experience and passion for serving her community will make her an excellent representative for Vancouver-Langara.”

Kirby-Yung will now shift her focus to the provincial election, which is set to take place on October 24th. She will be facing off against candidates from other parties, including the BC Liberals and the BC Greens.

With her nomination, Kirby-Yung joins a growing list of current city councillors who are seeking provincial seats in the upcoming election. This includes fellow Vancouver councillor, Christine Boyle, who is running for the BC Greens in the Vancouver-Kingsway riding.

The BC NDP is currently leading in the polls, with Horgan’s government receiving high approval ratings for their handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. It remains to be seen how Kirby-Yung’s nomination will impact the party’s chances in the Vancouver-Langara riding.

For now, Kirby-Yung is focused on connecting with the community and earning their support in the upcoming election. She is determined to bring her experience and dedication to the provincial level and make a positive impact for the people of Vancouver-Langara.
