The Calgary Stampeders secured a 32-24 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday night, thanks in large part to the steady foot of kicker Rene Paredes.
Paredes, who has been a key player for the Stampeders since joining the team in 2011, was responsible for 20 of the team’s points, including six field goals and two converts. His consistent performance on the field helped the Stampeders maintain a lead throughout the game.
The Stampeders started off strong, with quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell connecting with receiver Kamar Jorden for a 20-yard touchdown in the first quarter. However, the Tiger-Cats quickly responded with a touchdown of their own, tying the game at 7-7.
Paredes then kicked two field goals in the second quarter, giving the Stampeders a 13-7 lead at halftime. The Tiger-Cats fought back in the third quarter, scoring two touchdowns and taking a 21-16 lead.
But Paredes remained a reliable force for the Stampeders, kicking two more field goals in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 24-24. With just over two minutes left in the game, Mitchell connected with receiver Josh Huff for a 15-yard touchdown, putting the Stampeders ahead for good.
The Stampeders’ defense also played a crucial role in the victory, with linebacker Cory Greenwood recording a team-high eight tackles and defensive back Raheem Wilson intercepting a pass in the fourth quarter.
The Tiger-Cats put up a strong fight, with quarterback Dane Evans throwing for 332 yards and two touchdowns. However, their efforts were not enough to overcome the Stampeders’ consistent performance.
With this win, the Stampeders improve their record to 2-1 for the season, while the Tiger-Cats fall to 1-2. The Stampeders will look to continue their winning streak next week as they take on the Ottawa Redblacks, while the Tiger-Cats will face off against the Montreal Alouettes.
