Doug Ford directs LCBO to go back to using single-use paper bags

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has directed the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) to revert back to using single-use paper bags, reversing a previous decision to switch to reusable bags.

The decision to switch to reusable bags was made in an effort to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainability. However, the premier has now stated that the switch has caused inconvenience for customers and has led to an increase in shoplifting.

In a statement released on Monday, Ford said, “We have heard the concerns of our customers and store owners and have decided to go back to using single-use paper bags at the LCBO.”

The premier also mentioned that the reusable bags were not as durable as expected and were causing issues for customers who were unable to carry their purchases.

The LCBO had initially made the switch to reusable bags in January 2021, with the goal of reducing plastic waste by 2025. However, the decision was met with criticism from customers and store owners who complained about the bags tearing easily and being too small to carry larger purchases.

The reversal of this decision has been welcomed by many, including the Retail Council of Canada, who stated that the switch to reusable bags was causing “significant operational challenges” for retailers.

The LCBO has confirmed that they will be phasing out the use of reusable bags and will be reintroducing single-use paper bags in the coming weeks.

This decision by Premier Ford highlights the importance of considering the practicality and effectiveness of sustainability measures, and the need to balance environmental concerns with the convenience and satisfaction of customers.
