In a thrilling night of local hockey, Travis Konecny set a new career high and was named the Goure Award runner-up, while Anthony Lucarelli took home the MVP title.
Konecny, a Chatham native and forward for the Philadelphia Flyers, scored his 24th goal of the season in a game against the New York Rangers. This surpasses his previous career high of 23 goals, which he achieved in the 2018-2019 season.
The Goure Award, named after local hockey legend Ken Goure, is given to the top scorer in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Konecny was a close runner-up for the award, finishing the season with 70 points in just 51 games.
But it wasn’t just Konecny who had a standout season. Lucarelli, a forward for the Chatham Maroons, was named the Most Valuable Player for the 2019-2020 season. He led the Maroons with 30 goals and 33 assists, totaling 63 points in 48 games.
Lucarelli’s impressive performance helped the Maroons secure a playoff spot, where they unfortunately fell to the Leamington Flyers in the first round.
Despite the disappointing end to the season, both Konecny and Lucarelli have proven themselves as top players in the local hockey scene. Their dedication and skill have not gone unnoticed, and they continue to make their hometown proud.
As the season comes to a close, we can only look forward to what these talented athletes will achieve in the future. Congratulations to Travis Konecny and Anthony Lucarelli on their outstanding achievements this season.
