Brantford Hospital Volunteers: The Icing on the Cake
The Brantford General Hospital has been serving the community for over 130 years, providing exceptional healthcare services to its residents. But behind the scenes, there is a group of dedicated individuals who play a crucial role in making the hospital experience a little brighter for patients and staff alike – the volunteers.
With over 300 volunteers, the Brantford General Hospital Auxiliary has been an integral part of the hospital since its inception in 1891. These volunteers selflessly give their time and energy to support the hospital in various ways, from fundraising to providing comfort and assistance to patients.
One of the most notable contributions of the volunteers is their fundraising efforts. Through various events and initiatives, they have raised over $1 million for the hospital in the past five years alone. These funds have been used to purchase new equipment, upgrade facilities, and support important programs and services.
But their impact goes beyond just monetary contributions. The volunteers also play a vital role in providing comfort and support to patients during their stay at the hospital. From delivering flowers and cards to patients’ rooms to providing a listening ear and a friendly smile, their presence brings a sense of warmth and compassion to the hospital environment.
Their dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed. In 2019, the Brantford General Hospital Auxiliary was awarded the Ontario Hospital Association’s Volunteer Award of Excellence, recognizing their outstanding contributions to the hospital and the community.

As volunteer coordinator, Karen Willett, puts it, “Volunteering at the hospital is like icing on the cake. It’s the little extra touch that makes everything better.”
