Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has announced that he will most likely miss his second consecutive game as the team prepares to host the Arizona Coyotes.
McDavid, who has been dealing with a lower-body injury, sat out of the Oilers’ game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday. He had hoped to return to the ice for Wednesday’s game against the Coyotes, but has now stated that he will likely need more time to recover.
In an interview with CTV News, McDavid explained that he wants to make sure he is fully healed before returning to play.
“I want to be out there with my team, but I also have to be smart about my injury and not rush back too soon,” McDavid said. “I want to make sure I am 100% ready to go when I do come back.”
The Oilers have been struggling without their star player, losing their last two games. However, McDavid’s absence has given other players the opportunity to step up and contribute to the team’s success.
“It’s tough not having Connor out there, but it’s also a chance for other guys to step up and show what they can do,” said Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl. “We have a deep team and we have to trust that everyone will do their part.”
McDavid’s injury is not expected to be long-term, and he is hopeful to return to the lineup soon. In the meantime, the Oilers will have to rely on their depth and teamwork to secure a win against the Coyotes.
The Oilers currently sit in second place in the North Division with a record of 14-10-0. The Coyotes, on the other hand, are struggling with a record of 10-11-3 and are looking to bounce back after a recent loss to the Calgary Flames.
The game between the Oilers and Coyotes is set to take place on Wednesday at 7 p.m. MT at Rogers Place. Fans can tune in to watch the action on Sportsnet or listen on 630 CHED radio.
