The race for the leadership of the New Democratic Party (NDP) heated up as candidates gathered in Calgary for a debate on Saturday.
The event, held at the Telus Convention Centre, saw four contenders vying for the top spot: Jagmeet Singh, Niki Ashton, Guy Caron, and Charlie Angus.
The debate covered a wide range of topics, including the economy, healthcare, and the environment. Each candidate had the opportunity to present their vision for the future of the party and answer questions from the audience.
One of the main issues discussed was the economy, with candidates offering different approaches to address income inequality and job creation. Singh emphasized the need for a fairer tax system, while Ashton proposed a universal basic income. Caron focused on investing in green jobs, and Angus highlighted the importance of supporting small businesses.
Healthcare was also a hot topic, with all candidates agreeing on the need for a universal pharmacare program. Singh and Ashton also called for increased mental health services, while Caron and Angus emphasized the importance of addressing the opioid crisis.
The environment was another key issue, with all candidates pledging to take action on climate change. Singh proposed a national carbon tax, while Ashton advocated for a Green New Deal. Caron and Angus both emphasized the need for a just transition to a green economy.
Throughout the debate, candidates also took the opportunity to differentiate themselves from each other. Singh highlighted his experience as a former Ontario MPP, while Ashton emphasized her grassroots organizing. Caron and Angus both emphasized their experience as Members of Parliament.
The debate was the first of six scheduled before the NDP leadership vote in October. The next debate will take place in Montreal on March 26.
The NDP leadership race was triggered by the resignation of former leader Tom Mulcair in 2016. The party has been without a permanent leader since then, with Singh serving as interim leader.
The winner of the leadership race will face the challenge of rebuilding the party after a disappointing showing in the 2019 federal election. The NDP currently holds 24 seats in the House of Commons.
The debate in Calgary provided a platform for the candidates to showcase their ideas and engage with party members. As the race continues, Canadians will be watching closely to see who will lead the NDP into the next federal election.
