A hospital research centre in Winnipeg was evacuated on Tuesday afternoon after a suspicious package was found on the premises. The Winnipeg Police Bomb Unit was called to the scene to investigate.

According to police, the package was discovered around 2:30 p.m. at the Health Sciences Centre’s Thorlakson Building. The building was immediately evacuated as a precautionary measure.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Explosive Disposal Unit was called in to assess the package and determine if it posed any threat. The area surrounding the building was cordoned off and traffic was diverted as a safety precaution.

After thorough investigation, the bomb unit determined that the package was not a threat and the area was deemed safe. The evacuation order was lifted and employees were allowed to return to the building.

The Health Sciences Centre released a statement thanking the Winnipeg Police Service for their swift response and ensuring the safety of their staff and patients. They also expressed their gratitude to the public for their cooperation during the incident.

This is not the first time the Winnipeg Police Bomb Unit has been called to the Health Sciences Centre. In 2019, a similar incident occurred when a suspicious package was found at the same location. The package was also deemed safe after investigation.

The Winnipeg Police Service reminds the public to always report any suspicious packages or activities to the authorities. They also urge everyone to remain calm and follow instructions during such incidents.

The investigation into the origin of the package is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Service.
