A streetcar derailment in downtown Toronto has left three people injured, according to TTC officials.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at the intersection of Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue. The streetcar, which was heading westbound on Queen Street, derailed and collided with a pole, causing significant damage to the front of the vehicle.
Emergency services were immediately called to the scene and three people were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The extent of their injuries is currently unknown.
TTC spokesperson Stuart Green stated that the cause of the derailment is still under investigation. He also confirmed that there were no other vehicles involved in the crash.
The intersection was closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene and repair the damaged pole. The TTC has advised commuters to expect delays in the area and to use alternate routes if possible.
This is not the first time a streetcar has derailed in Toronto. In 2019, a streetcar derailed near Bathurst Street and Fleet Street, causing significant delays for commuters.
The TTC has assured the public that safety is their top priority and they will be conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the derailment. They have also stated that they will be providing updates as more information becomes available.
As of now, the intersection has been reopened and streetcar service has resumed. However, commuters are advised to check for any updates or delays before heading out.
This incident serves as a reminder for all commuters to remain vigilant and follow all safety protocols while using public transportation.
