Varsho has grand slam as Blue Jays hold off Rockies 5-3 in Rodriguez's MLB debut

Toronto, ON – The Toronto Blue Jays held off the Colorado Rockies in a 5-3 victory on Saturday, with rookie pitcher Julian Rodriguez making his MLB debut.

The game started off strong for the Blue Jays, with Randal Grichuk hitting a two-run homer in the first inning. However, the Rockies quickly caught up, tying the game in the third inning with a two-run homer from Trevor Story.

But the Blue Jays didn’t let the tie last for long. In the bottom of the third, rookie catcher Daulton Varsho hit a grand slam, giving the Blue Jays a 5-2 lead. This was Varsho’s first career grand slam and it proved to be the game-winning hit.

Rodriguez, who was called up from the minors just hours before the game, had a solid debut. He pitched five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out six batters. The 23-year-old showed great composure and control on the mound, impressing both his teammates and the crowd.

The Rockies tried to make a comeback in the ninth inning, scoring one run off Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano. But Romano was able to shut them down and secure the win for the Blue Jays.

This victory marks the Blue Jays’ fourth win in a row and improves their record to 7-4 for the season. The team has been on a hot streak, with strong performances from both their offense and pitching staff.

Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo praised his team’s performance, saying, “It was a great team effort. Our offense came through with some big hits and our pitching was solid. And of course, Julian’s debut was impressive. We’re excited to see what he can do in the future.”

The Blue Jays will look to continue their winning streak as they face the Rockies again on Sunday. With Rodriguez’s impressive debut and the team’s strong momentum, fans can expect an exciting game.
