Campfires permitted again in certain Quebec regions, ban remains in the north

After weeks of strict fire bans, campfires are once again permitted in certain regions of Quebec. However, the ban remains in effect for the northern parts of the province.

The decision to lift the ban was made by the Société de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPFEU) on Monday, following a decrease in the number of forest fires and improved weather conditions. The ban had been in place since April 15, in an effort to prevent the spread of wildfires during the dry spring season.

According to SOPFEU, campfires are now allowed in the regions of Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Côte-Nord, Gaspésie, and Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. However, the ban remains in effect for the northern regions of Nord-du-Québec and Eeyou Istchee, where the risk of wildfires is still high.

While campfires are now permitted, SOPFEU reminds the public to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines. This includes ensuring that the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the site, and not leaving it unattended at any time.

The decision to lift the ban has been met with relief by many campers and outdoor enthusiasts, who can now enjoy the traditional campfire experience once again. However, SOPFEU urges the public to remain vigilant and report any signs of fire immediately.

As the summer season approaches, it is important for everyone to do their part in preventing wildfires. This includes following fire safety regulations and being mindful of any potential fire hazards. With the cooperation of the public, we can all help protect our forests and keep our communities safe.
