Pro-Palestinian protesters at the University of British Columbia (UBC) have vowed to continue their fight, despite dwindling numbers at their encampment.
The protest, which began on May 14th, saw a large group of demonstrators set up tents and occupy the UBC campus in solidarity with Palestinians facing violence and displacement in the ongoing conflict with Israel.
However, as the days passed, the number of protesters at the encampment began to decrease. On May 20th, only a handful of tents remained, with some protesters choosing to leave due to personal commitments or concerns about safety.
Despite the decrease in numbers, those who remain at the encampment are determined to continue their protest and raise awareness about the situation in Palestine.
“We may be fewer in numbers, but our voices are still strong and our message remains the same,” said protester Sarah Ahmed. “We will not be silenced until justice is served for the Palestinian people.”
The encampment has faced some opposition from pro-Israel groups, with some incidents of verbal and physical altercations reported. However, the UBC administration has stated that the protesters have the right to peacefully demonstrate on campus.
“We respect the right to peaceful protest and we are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all members of our community,” said UBC President Santa Ono in a statement.
The protest at UBC is just one of many demonstrations taking place across Canada and around the world in support of Palestine. The conflict has escalated in recent weeks, with hundreds of Palestinians killed and thousands injured in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.
The protesters at UBC are calling for an end to the violence and for the Canadian government to take a stronger stance in support of Palestine.
“We cannot stand by and watch innocent lives being lost,” said protester Omar Khan. “We urge the Canadian government to take action and condemn the violence against Palestinians.”
The encampment at UBC may be dwindling in numbers, but the determination and passion of the remaining protesters show that their fight for justice and peace in Palestine will continue.
