Teen takes parents’ car to grab food, rear-ends another vehicle on Highway 401: OPP

A serious car crash on Highway 401 in Mississauga has left one person dead and several others injured.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the collision occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday near Dixie Road. The highway was closed in both directions for several hours as emergency crews responded to the scene.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt stated that a transport truck and multiple passenger vehicles were involved in the crash. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while several others were taken to hospital with varying injuries.

The identity of the deceased has not been released at this time, pending notification of next of kin.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but Schmidt noted that weather conditions may have played a role. The area was experiencing heavy snowfall at the time of the collision.

The highway was reopened to traffic around 8 p.m. on Saturday, but the investigation is ongoing.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder for drivers to exercise caution and adjust their driving to the weather conditions. The OPP is urging anyone with information or dashcam footage of the crash to come forward and assist with the investigation.
