Work stoppage averted for Richmond, B.C., boating production workers, machinists

Richmond, B.C. – A potential work stoppage for boating production workers and machinists in Richmond, B.C. has been averted, bringing relief to both employees and employers.

After weeks of negotiations, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 1857 and the Boilermakers Lodge 359 reached a tentative agreement with their employer, Platinum Marine, on Sunday.

The agreement, which still needs to be ratified by the union members, includes a wage increase of 2.5% in the first year and 2% in the second year, as well as improvements to benefits and working conditions.

According to IAM District Lodge 250 Business Representative, Walter Gerlach, the negotiations were challenging but ultimately successful. “We are pleased to have reached a fair and reasonable agreement that addresses the concerns of our members while also recognizing the needs of the company,” Gerlach stated.

The potential work stoppage was looming over the 150 employees at Platinum Marine, who build and repair luxury yachts and commercial vessels. The company had expressed concerns about the impact a strike would have on their business and their clients.

“We are relieved that an agreement has been reached and we can continue to provide our clients with the high-quality products and services they expect from us,” said Platinum Marine President, Shane Fraser.

The tentative agreement was reached just hours before the strike deadline, which was set for 12:01 a.m. on Monday. The union had issued a 72-hour strike notice on Thursday, after negotiations stalled.

The IAM and Boilermakers unions represent a significant portion of the workforce at Platinum Marine, with the IAM representing 80 production workers and the Boilermakers representing 40 machinists.

The tentative agreement will now be presented to the union members for ratification. If approved, it will be in effect until June 30, 2022.

This news brings relief to both the employees and the company, as they can now continue their work without the threat of a strike.
