A fire broke out at a composting site in southeast Calgary on Tuesday afternoon, causing significant damage to the facility.
According to the Calgary Fire Department, the blaze started around 2:30 p.m. at the facility located on 68 Street and 114 Avenue SE. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.
Crews immediately began working to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures. The fire was brought under control within an hour, but not before causing extensive damage to the composting site.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the fire. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
The composting site, which is operated by the City of Calgary, is used to process organic waste from households and businesses. It is not yet known how the fire will impact the city’s composting operations.
Residents in the area were advised to stay indoors and keep their windows closed due to the heavy smoke. The Calgary Fire Department also issued a warning for drivers to avoid the area as emergency crews worked to extinguish the fire.
The fire serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures, especially in industrial facilities. The Calgary Fire Department urges all businesses to regularly review and update their fire safety protocols to prevent such incidents from occurring.
As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, the City of Calgary will work to assess the damage and determine the next steps for the composting site. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
In the meantime, residents are reminded to stay vigilant and report any potential fire hazards to the authorities. The safety of our community is of utmost importance and we must all do our part to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
