Vancouver artists are coming together for the second annual Graffiti Jam in hopes of changing the public’s perception of street art. The event, which will take place on July 10th at the Mount Pleasant Community Centre, aims to showcase the talent and creativity of local graffiti artists.
Organized by the Vancouver Street Art Society, the Graffiti Jam will feature live painting demonstrations, workshops, and a graffiti art exhibition. The event is open to the public and free of charge, with the goal of engaging the community and promoting a positive understanding of street art.
According to the society’s president, John Smith, the Graffiti Jam is an opportunity for artists to showcase their skills and for the public to see graffiti in a different light. “Street art is often seen as vandalism, but we want to change that perception and show that it is a legitimate form of art,” Smith stated.
The event will also feature a panel discussion with local artists, who will share their experiences and insights on the world of graffiti. This will provide a platform for dialogue and education, as well as an opportunity for the public to interact with the artists and learn more about their work.
The Vancouver Street Art Society hopes that the Graffiti Jam will not only change the public’s view of street art, but also create a sense of community and appreciation for the art form. “Graffiti is a way for artists to express themselves and make a statement about the world around them,” Smith explained. “We want to foster a positive and inclusive environment for street artists to thrive in.”
The society also hopes to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and protecting street art in the city. “Graffiti is a part of our urban landscape and it should be respected and preserved,” Smith emphasized.
The first Graffiti Jam, held in 2020, was a success with over 500 attendees and positive feedback from the community. This year’s event is expected to be even bigger and better, with a diverse lineup of artists and activities.
In addition to the Graffiti Jam, the Vancouver Street Art Society also organizes various community projects and initiatives to promote and support street art in the city. For more information about the society and their upcoming events, visit their website at www.vancouverstreetartsociety.com.
