A Canadian woman has been charged after authorities allegedly found $13.4 million worth of methamphetamine in her luggage.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the incident occurred on December 23 at the Calgary International Airport. The woman, who has not been identified, was returning to Canada from a trip to Mexico.
Upon inspection of her luggage, border officers discovered 228 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden inside multiple suitcases. The estimated street value of the drugs is approximately $13.4 million.
The woman was arrested and charged with importation of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking. She is scheduled to appear in court on January 13.
The RCMP’s Federal Serious and Organized Crime unit is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Canada Border Services Agency and the Calgary Police Service.
In a statement, RCMP Superintendent Allan Lai emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “This is a significant seizure and it demonstrates the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to keep dangerous drugs out of our communities.”
The RCMP also reminded the public of the serious consequences of drug trafficking, including potential harm to individuals and communities, as well as the potential for lengthy prison sentences.
