Winnipeg Police Chief officially retires

After 35 years of dedicated service, Winnipeg Police Chief Danny Smyth has officially retired from his position.

Smyth, who has been the chief of the Winnipeg Police Service since 2016, announced his retirement in December of last year. His last day on the job was on January 4, 2021.

During his tenure, Smyth oversaw numerous changes and challenges within the police force, including the implementation of the body-worn camera program and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, Smyth expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the chief of police and thanked the community for their support.

“I am incredibly proud of the work we have accomplished together as a police service and as a community,” Smyth said. “I am confident that the Winnipeg Police Service will continue to serve and protect the citizens of Winnipeg with the utmost professionalism and dedication.”

Smyth’s retirement comes at a time of increased scrutiny and calls for police reform across the country. However, he believes that the Winnipeg Police Service is well-equipped to handle these challenges.

“I have full confidence in the leadership team and the dedicated officers of the Winnipeg Police Service to continue to serve our community with integrity and compassion,” Smyth stated.

The search for a new police chief is currently underway, with Deputy Chief Art Stannard serving as the interim chief until a permanent replacement is found.

In a statement, Mayor Brian Bowman thanked Smyth for his years of service and wished him well in his retirement.

“On behalf of the City of Winnipeg, I want to thank Chief Smyth for his dedication and commitment to keeping our city safe,” Bowman said. “We wish him all the best in his retirement and look forward to the continued leadership of the Winnipeg Police Service under new leadership.”

Smyth’s retirement marks the end of an era for the Winnipeg Police Service, but his legacy and impact on the community will continue to be felt for years to come.
