A sales representative at an auto dealership in Toronto has been arrested by police for allegedly committing fraud amounting to $1.5 million.
According to authorities, the accused, who has not been named, was arrested on Wednesday after an extensive investigation by the Toronto Police Service’s Financial Crimes Unit.
The investigation began in May 2020 when the dealership reported suspicious activity involving one of their sales representatives. It was discovered that the accused had been fraudulently obtaining funds from customers through false vehicle sales and financing transactions.
Police say the accused would manipulate the sales process by creating fake invoices and financing documents, resulting in customers unknowingly paying more than the actual price of the vehicle. The accused would then pocket the extra funds.
The fraudulent activity is believed to have taken place over a period of two years, from 2018 to 2020. The total amount of money involved is estimated to be $1.5 million.
The accused has been charged with multiple counts of fraud over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, and uttering forged documents. They are scheduled to appear in court on September 9.
The Toronto Police Service is urging anyone who may have been a victim of this fraud to come forward and contact the Financial Crimes Unit.
This case serves as a reminder for consumers to be vigilant when making large purchases and to thoroughly review all documents before signing. It also highlights the importance of businesses implementing proper checks and balances to prevent fraudulent activities.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
