Acadia University in Nova Scotia celebrated Star Trek Day on September 8th, honoring the iconic science fiction franchise and its impact on popular culture.

The event, organized by the university’s Department of English and Theatre, featured a variety of activities and discussions centered around the beloved series. This year marked the 55th anniversary of the original Star Trek series, which first aired on September 8th, 1966.

Attendees were treated to a screening of the classic episode “The Trouble with Tribbles” and a panel discussion on the show’s enduring themes and messages. The panel, consisting of professors and students, delved into topics such as diversity, exploration, and the human condition, all of which are central to the Star Trek universe.

In addition, there was a cosplay contest where participants dressed up as their favorite characters from the franchise. The winner, a student who dressed as Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation, received a prize for their impressive costume.

The event also featured a virtual tour of the Star Trek exhibit at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, giving attendees a chance to see props and costumes from the show up close.

Dr. Roberta Barker, a professor in the Department of English and Theatre and one of the organizers of the event, spoke about the importance of celebrating Star Trek Day. “Star Trek has had a significant impact on our society, inspiring generations of scientists, artists, and dreamers,” she said. “It’s a cultural phenomenon that continues to resonate with people of all ages.”

The celebration of Star Trek Day at Acadia University is just one example of the enduring legacy of the franchise. With new series and movies in the works, it’s clear that the Star Trek universe will continue to captivate audiences for years to come.
