Suspicious package in downtown Vancouver not an explosive, police say

A suspicious package found in downtown Vancouver on Tuesday afternoon has been deemed non-explosive by police.

According to authorities, the package was discovered near the intersection of West Georgia and Granville streets around 2:30 p.m. Police immediately cordoned off the area and called in the Explosive Disposal Unit to investigate.

After thorough examination, the package was determined to not pose any threat to public safety. The area was reopened to the public shortly after 4 p.m.

Police have not released any further details about the contents of the package or how it ended up in the downtown area. They are continuing to investigate the incident.

This is not the first time a suspicious package has caused concern in Vancouver. In December 2020, a similar incident occurred when a package was found outside the Vancouver Art Gallery. It was later determined to be a false alarm.

Authorities are reminding the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or packages to the police immediately. They also urge individuals to not touch or move any suspicious items, as it can potentially compromise the investigation.

As of now, there is no indication that the two incidents are related. Police are asking anyone with information about the package found on Tuesday to come forward and assist with their investigation.

The safety of the public is of utmost importance, and the Vancouver Police Department is committed to ensuring the well-being of all citizens. They will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
