The Calgary Flames are gearing up for the start of the 2021-2022 NHL season with a strong “no-quit” mentality, according to center Mikael Backlund.
As the team prepares for their first game against the Edmonton Oilers on October 16th, Backlund expressed his confidence in the Flames’ determination and resilience.
“We have a great group of guys who never give up, no matter the circumstances,” Backlund said in an interview with CTV News. “We have a lot of depth and talent on this team, and we’re ready to show it on the ice.”
The Flames are coming off a disappointing season, finishing fifth in the North Division and missing the playoffs. However, with a new coaching staff and several key offseason acquisitions, including defenseman Nikita Zadorov and forward Blake Coleman, the team is looking to turn things around.
“We have a lot to prove this season,” Backlund stated. “But we’re all hungry and determined to make a statement and bring success to this city.”
Head coach Darryl Sutter, who led the Flames to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004, has instilled a strong work ethic and winning mentality in the team during training camp.
“We’re focused on playing a fast, physical, and relentless style of hockey,” Sutter said. “We want to be a team that never gives up and fights until the very end.”
The Flames will also have the support of their loyal fan base, with the Scotiabank Saddledome set to welcome back full capacity crowds for the first time since March 2020.
“We can’t wait to have our fans back in the building,” Backlund said. “Their energy and support will be a huge boost for us.”
With the season just around the corner, the Flames are determined to start strong and prove that they are a force to be reckoned with in the NHL. Fans can expect an exciting and competitive season from this resilient team.
