Montreal, QC – The Montreal Canadiens kicked off their season with a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night, thanks to a stellar performance by goaltender Samuel Montembeault.
The 24-year-old netminder made 47 saves, earning himself a well-deserved shutout in his first start for the Canadiens. Montembeault, who was acquired by Montreal in a trade with the Florida Panthers in July, proved to be a valuable addition to the team.
The Canadiens’ defense was put to the test early on, as the Maple Leafs came out strong in the first period, outshooting Montreal 19-7. However, Montembeault stood tall and made some impressive saves to keep the game scoreless.
In the second period, the Canadiens found their footing and began to generate more scoring chances. They were finally able to break through the Maple Leafs’ defense with a goal from forward Tyler Toffoli, assisted by Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield.
The third period saw the Maple Leafs ramp up their offensive efforts, but Montembeault continued to make save after save, frustrating Toronto’s top scorers. The Canadiens’ penalty kill unit also played a crucial role in preserving the shutout, successfully killing off all five of Toronto’s power play opportunities.
Montembeault’s performance was not only impressive, but also historic. He became the first goaltender in Canadiens’ history to record a shutout in his debut with the team. His 47 saves also set a new record for most saves in a shutout by a Canadiens’ goaltender.
The Canadiens’ head coach, Dominique Ducharme, praised Montembeault’s performance, stating, “He was outstanding tonight. He gave us a chance to win and that’s all you can ask for from your goaltender.”
Montembeault himself was humble about his performance, saying, “I just wanted to give my team a chance to win. I’m happy I was able to do that tonight.”
