Community groups band together to plant trees at Kelowna's Ben Lee Park

Kelowna’s Ben Lee Park is getting a green makeover thanks to the efforts of several community groups. On Saturday, volunteers from the Kelowna Community Food Bank, the Okanagan Fruit Tree Project, and the City of Kelowna’s Urban Forestry team came together to plant 50 new trees in the park.

The initiative was part of the City of Kelowna’s Urban Forest Management Strategy, which aims to increase the city’s tree canopy cover to 20% by 2030. The newly planted trees, which include a variety of species such as maple, oak, and cherry, will not only beautify the park but also provide important environmental benefits such as improving air quality and reducing the urban heat island effect.

The event was made possible through a partnership between the City of Kelowna and the Kelowna Community Food Bank, which provided the funding for the trees. The Okanagan Fruit Tree Project also played a crucial role by providing expertise on tree planting and maintenance.

Volunteers of all ages came out to lend a hand, including members of the Kelowna Youth Action Council. They were joined by Mayor Colin Basran, who expressed his gratitude for the community’s efforts in making Kelowna a greener and more sustainable city.

The tree planting event not only brought together different community groups but also highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving common goals. It also served as a reminder of the impact that individuals and organizations can have in creating positive change in their community.

The City of Kelowna’s Urban Forestry team will continue to monitor and care for the newly planted trees to ensure their growth and survival. They also encourage residents to get involved in future tree planting initiatives and help make Kelowna a more vibrant and environmentally friendly city.

The success of this event is a testament to the power of community and the impact that small actions can have in creating a better future for all. With continued efforts and collaboration, Kelowna’s tree canopy cover will continue to grow, providing numerous benefits for both the environment and the community.
