'Prolonged heavy rain' coming to B.C.'s South Coast

Residents of British Columbia’s South Coast are bracing for a prolonged period of heavy rain, according to meteorologists.

The forecast, issued by Environment Canada, warns of a series of storms that will bring significant rainfall to the region over the next few days. The first storm is expected to hit on Wednesday, with the potential for up to 50 millimeters of rain in some areas.

This will be followed by a second storm on Thursday, which could bring an additional 50 to 70 millimeters of rain. The third and potentially most powerful storm is expected to arrive on Friday, with the potential for up to 100 millimeters of rain in some areas.

The prolonged heavy rain is expected to cause localized flooding and could also lead to landslides in areas with steep terrain. Residents are advised to take precautions and be prepared for potential power outages and transportation disruptions.

The heavy rain is also a concern for those living near rivers and streams, as water levels are expected to rise significantly. The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a high streamflow advisory for the South Coast, warning of potential flooding in low-lying areas.

In addition to the heavy rain, strong winds are also expected to accompany the storms, with gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour in some areas. This could lead to hazardous conditions for drivers and could also cause damage to trees and power lines.

Environment Canada is urging residents to stay informed and monitor weather updates as the situation develops. They also advise taking necessary precautions to protect property and ensure personal safety.

The prolonged heavy rain is expected to continue into the weekend, with the potential for more storms next week. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and be prepared for potential impacts from the ongoing weather system.
