A contractor has been chosen to lead the design and construction of new SkyTrain stations in Surrey and Langley, according to an announcement made by TransLink on Tuesday.
The selected contractor, a joint venture between Aecon and Dragados, will be responsible for the design and construction of the two new stations, as well as the elevated guideway that will connect them.
The new stations, located at 166th Street in Surrey and 203rd Street in Langley, are part of the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension project, which aims to connect the existing SkyTrain network to the rapidly growing communities in Surrey and Langley.
TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond expressed his excitement for the project, stating that the new stations will provide much-needed transportation options for residents and businesses in the area.
The contractor selection process was highly competitive, with four shortlisted teams submitting proposals for the project. The Aecon-Dragados joint venture was ultimately chosen due to their extensive experience in delivering major transportation projects, including the Evergreen Line and the Canada Line.
The contract for the design and construction of the new stations is valued at $889 million and is expected to create over 8,000 jobs during the construction phase.
Construction is set to begin in late 2021, with the new stations expected to open in 2025. The project is being funded by the federal and provincial governments, as well as TransLink and the cities of Surrey and Langley.
The new SkyTrain extension is a crucial step in improving transportation options and reducing congestion in the rapidly growing communities of Surrey and Langley. With the contractor now selected, the project is one step closer to becoming a reality.
