A Manitoba man is crediting a stem cell transplant for helping him in his fight against cancer.
John Smith, 45, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2019 and was told by doctors that he had a slim chance of survival. However, after receiving a stem cell transplant from his sister, Smith’s health began to improve.
“Without her, I’m not here,” Smith told CTV News. “She saved my life.”
Stem cell transplants involve replacing damaged or diseased cells with healthy ones from a donor. In Smith’s case, his sister was a perfect match, making the transplant more successful.
According to Dr. Jane Doe, a hematologist at the Manitoba Cancer Care Program, stem cell transplants can be a life-saving treatment for patients with certain types of cancer.

“I couldn’t have done it without my family and the amazing doctors and nurses who took care of me,” Smith said.
After months of treatment and recovery, Smith’s cancer is now in remission. He is grateful for the second chance at life that the stem cell transplant has given him.
“I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family and making the most out of every day,” Smith said.
