Toronto Maple Leafs star player Mitch Marner has been selected to represent Canada in the upcoming 4 Nations tournament. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Hockey Canada, solidifying Marner’s spot on the national team roster.
Marner, who has been a key player for the Maple Leafs since joining the team in 2016, will join other top Canadian players in the tournament, which will take place in Helsinki, Finland from November 4-7. The 4 Nations tournament is an annual event that features the top women’s hockey teams from Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the United States.
Marner’s selection to the national team comes as no surprise, as he has consistently proven himself as a top performer on the ice. In the 2020-2021 season, he recorded 67 points in 55 games, making him the second-highest scorer on the Maple Leafs team.
The 24-year-old forward expressed his excitement and honor in being chosen to represent his country in the tournament. “It’s always an honor to wear the red and white maple leaf and represent Canada on the international stage,” Marner said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to competing against some of the best players in the world and bringing home a win for Canada.”
Marner’s addition to the roster adds even more depth and talent to the already strong Canadian team. Other notable players on the roster include Marie-Philip Poulin, who will serve as captain, and goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens.
The 4 Nations tournament will serve as a crucial preparation for the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, where Canada will be looking to defend their gold medal from the 2018 games in Pyeongchang.
Hockey Canada’s Director of Women’s National Teams, Gina Kingsbury, expressed her confidence in the team’s ability to perform well in the tournament. “We have a strong group of players who have proven themselves at the international level, and we are excited to see them compete in the 4 Nations tournament,” Kingsbury said.
As the tournament approaches, all eyes will be on Marner and the rest of the Canadian team as they aim to bring home another victory for their country. Fans can catch all the action live on TSN and RDS.
