Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard is facing sentencing for his sexual assault convictions. The 79-year-old Canadian businessman, who once ran a multi-million dollar fashion empire, was found guilty of nine counts of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement in December 2020.
The sentencing hearing is set to take place on Friday, May 14th, in a Winnipeg courtroom. Nygard’s legal team has requested a sentence of no more than 90 days, citing his age and health concerns. However, the Crown is seeking a sentence of 18 years, arguing that Nygard’s actions were “predatory, brazen, and persistent.”
The charges against Nygard stem from allegations made by 10 women, who say they were sexually assaulted by him between 1977 and 2015. The victims, who were between the ages of 14 and 21 at the time of the assaults, described being lured to Nygard’s properties under the guise of modeling opportunities, only to be drugged and sexually assaulted.
During the trial, the court heard testimony from the victims, as well as from former employees of Nygard’s company who described a culture of sexual harassment and abuse within the workplace. The defense argued that the allegations were part of a conspiracy orchestrated by Nygard’s rival, American billionaire Louis Bacon.
Nygard, who has been in custody since his arrest in December 2020, has maintained his innocence throughout the trial. His legal team has indicated that they plan to appeal the convictions.
The sentencing hearing is expected to be emotional, as the victims will have the opportunity to address the court and share the impact of Nygard’s actions on their lives. The judge will also consider victim impact statements and character references from both the prosecution and defense before handing down a sentence.
The case has garnered international attention, shining a spotlight on the issue of sexual assault and abuse in the fashion industry. It has also sparked conversations about the power dynamics and exploitation that can occur in the workplace.
As the sentencing hearing approaches, many are watching closely to see what punishment Nygard will receive for his crimes. The outcome of this case will not only bring closure to the victims, but also serve as a reminder that no one is above the law, regardless of their wealth or status.
