Montreal wants more businesses to plant trees

Real True News

Montreal is taking a proactive approach to combatting climate change by encouraging businesses to plant more trees. The city has launched a new initiative that aims to increase the number of trees in commercial areas, with the goal of creating a greener and more sustainable environment.

According to the city’s executive committee member, Luc Ferrandez, the initiative is part of Montreal’s larger plan to plant 300,000 trees by 2025. This new focus on businesses is a way to involve the private sector in the city’s efforts to fight climate change.

The initiative will provide businesses with financial incentives to plant trees on their properties. The city will cover up to 50% of the cost of purchasing and planting trees, with a maximum of $5,000 per business. This will not only help businesses financially, but it will also contribute to the city’s overall goal of increasing its tree canopy.

Montreal’s mayor, Valérie Plante, believes that this initiative will have a positive impact on the city’s environment and economy. “Trees are essential for our well-being and the health of our city,” she stated. “By planting more trees, we are not only improving the air quality and reducing the urban heat island effect, but we are also creating a more attractive and livable city for residents and visitors alike.”

The city has also partnered with the non-profit organization, Tree Canada, to provide businesses with guidance and support in selecting and planting the right trees for their properties. Tree Canada’s CEO, Michael Rosen, emphasized the importance of involving businesses in tree planting efforts. “Businesses have a crucial role to play in creating a sustainable future,” he said. “By planting trees, they are not only contributing to the environment, but they are also showing their commitment to being responsible corporate citizens.”

This initiative has been met with enthusiasm from both businesses and environmental groups. The Montreal Chamber of Commerce has expressed its support for the initiative, stating that it aligns with their own sustainability goals. Environmental groups, such as Équiterre, have also praised the city’s efforts to involve businesses in tree planting.

Montreal’s initiative to encourage businesses to plant trees is a step in the right direction towards creating a greener and more sustainable city. By involving the private sector, the city is not only increasing its tree canopy, but it is also promoting a sense of responsibility and collaboration in the fight against climate change.
