The Brantford City Council has approved additional funding for the Brant’s Crossing Bridge project, bringing the total budget to $8.5 million.
The decision was made during a council meeting on Tuesday, with all members in attendance. The project, which aims to replace the aging Lorne Bridge, has been in the works for several years and is expected to improve traffic flow and safety in the area.
According to Mayor Kevin Davis, the additional funding will ensure that the project is completed on time and within budget. He also emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure for the benefit of the community.
The original budget for the project was set at $7.5 million, but unforeseen challenges and rising construction costs have led to the need for additional funds. The new budget includes $1.5 million from the city’s capital budget and $500,000 from the federal government’s Gas Tax Fund.
Councillor Brian Van Tilborg, who represents the ward where the bridge is located, expressed his support for the project and the decision to allocate more funds. He stated that the new bridge will not only improve traffic flow, but also provide a safer route for pedestrians and cyclists.
Construction on the Brant’s Crossing Bridge is expected to begin in the spring of 2022 and be completed by the fall of 2023. The new bridge will feature two lanes for vehicles, as well as sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides.
The Lorne Bridge, which was built in 1932, has been deemed structurally deficient and in need of replacement. The new bridge will not only improve safety, but also accommodate the growing population and traffic in the area.
The City of Brantford has been working closely with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Ontario to ensure that the project meets all necessary standards and regulations.
With the approval of additional funding, the Brant’s Crossing Bridge project is one step closer to becoming a reality and providing a much-needed upgrade to the city’s infrastructure.
