Gillingham throws support behind $650 million plan to redevelop Portage Place

Winnipeg City Councillor Scott Gillingham has announced his full support for a $650 million plan to revitalize the Portage Place shopping centre.

The redevelopment plan, proposed by Toronto-based development firm Starlight Investments, aims to transform the struggling mall into a mixed-use development with residential, commercial, and retail spaces.

Gillingham, who represents the St. James-Brooklands-Weston ward where Portage Place is located, believes that this project has the potential to bring new life to the downtown area.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Gillingham said, “I am excited to see this ambitious plan for Portage Place. It has the potential to create a vibrant and thriving community in the heart of our city.”

The proposed redevelopment includes the construction of two residential towers, a hotel, and a new public plaza. The existing mall will also undergo major renovations, including a new food court and upgraded retail spaces.

Gillingham also highlighted the economic benefits of this project, stating that it will create hundreds of jobs during the construction phase and provide long-term employment opportunities once completed.

“This redevelopment will not only enhance the physical appearance of Portage Place, but it will also bring economic growth and job opportunities to our city,” Gillingham said.

The plan has received support from other city councillors, including Mayor Brian Bowman, who believes that this project will help revitalize the downtown area and attract more people to live, work, and play in the city centre.

However, the redevelopment plan is still subject to approval from the city’s planning, property, and development committee, as well as the city council.

If approved, construction is expected to begin in 2022 and be completed by 2025.

In the meantime, Gillingham encourages the public to provide feedback and share their thoughts on the proposed redevelopment plan.

“This is an exciting opportunity for our city, and I encourage everyone to get involved and have their voices heard,” Gillingham said.

The full details of the proposed redevelopment plan can be found on the City of Winnipeg’s website.
