As Winnipeg continues to prioritize sustainability and reducing food waste, the city is preparing to launch new drop-off locations for residents to dispose of their food scraps.
Starting on January 1st, 2022, Winnipeggers will have access to 10 new food waste drop-off locations across the city. These locations will be open year-round and will accept a variety of food waste, including fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, and grains.
The initiative is part of the city’s larger plan to divert organic waste from landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. According to the City of Winnipeg, food waste makes up about 30% of the total waste sent to landfills, where it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
Residents will be able to drop off their food waste in specially marked bins at the designated locations. The waste will then be transported to the Brady Road Resource Management Facility, where it will be turned into compost.
The new drop-off locations are strategically placed throughout the city to ensure accessibility for all residents. They will be located at community centers, libraries, and other public facilities, making it convenient for people to dispose of their food waste while running errands or participating in community activities.
The city is also working on a public education campaign to inform residents about the new drop-off locations and the importance of diverting food waste from landfills. This includes providing tips on how to properly store and transport food waste to prevent odors and pests.
