402 Winnipeg Squadron celebrates 92 years

Winnipeg, MB – The 402 Winnipeg Squadron, one of the oldest and most distinguished squadrons in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), celebrated its 92nd anniversary on Sunday.

The squadron, which was formed in 1928, has a rich history of serving the country and protecting its skies. It has been involved in numerous missions, including World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War.

To commemorate this milestone, a special ceremony was held at the 17 Wing Winnipeg base. The event was attended by current and former members of the squadron, as well as their families and friends.

During the ceremony, Lieutenant-Colonel Kevin McLeod, the commanding officer of the 402 Winnipeg Squadron, highlighted the squadron’s achievements and contributions over the years. He also expressed his gratitude to all the members, past and present, for their dedication and service.

“The 402 Winnipeg Squadron has a long and proud history of serving our country with honor and distinction,” said Lt.-Col. McLeod. “We are grateful for the sacrifices made by our members and their families, and we are proud to continue their legacy.”

The squadron also received a special message from Lieutenant-General Al Meinzinger, the commander of the RCAF, who praised the squadron for its commitment to excellence and its role in shaping the RCAF’s history.

In addition to the ceremony, the squadron also unveiled a new mural, which depicts the squadron’s history and accomplishments. The mural, created by local artist Charlie Johnston, will be displayed at the 17 Wing Winnipeg base for all to see.

The 402 Winnipeg Squadron has a strong connection to the city of Winnipeg, and its members have been actively involved in the community through various initiatives and events. They have also been recognized for their contributions, receiving numerous awards and accolades over the years.
