Surrey hikes fireworks fines ahead of Halloween and Diwali

Surrey Increases Fireworks Fines in Preparation for Halloween and Diwali Celebrations

As the festive season approaches, the city of Surrey has announced an increase in fines for the improper use of fireworks. The decision was made in an effort to promote safety and prevent potential harm to individuals and property.

Effective immediately, the fine for setting off fireworks without a permit has been raised from $200 to $500. This applies to both Halloween and Diwali celebrations, which are known to involve the use of fireworks.

According to Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum, the decision to increase fines was made after considering the safety concerns raised by residents and the potential risks associated with fireworks. He stated, “We want to ensure that everyone can enjoy the festivities without any harm or damage.”

The city has also reminded residents that a permit is required for the use of fireworks, and they must be purchased from a licensed retailer. Additionally, fireworks can only be set off on the designated days of October 31st for Halloween and November 4th for Diwali.

Surrey Fire Chief Larry Thomas emphasized the importance of following safety protocols when using fireworks. He stated, “Fireworks can be dangerous if not handled properly. We urge residents to read and follow the instructions carefully and to have a designated adult supervise the use of fireworks.”

The city has also implemented a zero-tolerance policy for the sale of illegal fireworks. Retailers found selling illegal fireworks will face a fine of $5000 and may have their business license revoked.

In addition to the increased fines, the city has also launched a public awareness campaign to educate residents on the proper use of fireworks and the potential risks associated with their misuse.

The decision to increase fines and promote safety measures has been welcomed by residents and community leaders. It is hoped that these measures will ensure a safe and enjoyable festive season for all in the city of Surrey.
