'This is their safe place': Hockey program breaks barriers for Indigenous kids

A hockey program in British Columbia is breaking barriers for Indigenous children, providing them with a safe and inclusive space to play the sport they love.

The program, called “This is Our Ice,” was created by the Vancouver Canucks and the First Nations Health Authority. It aims to promote physical activity and mental wellness among Indigenous youth through the game of hockey.

For many Indigenous children, hockey has always been a part of their culture and identity. However, due to financial barriers and lack of access to equipment and facilities, many have been unable to participate in organized hockey programs.

“This is Our Ice” addresses these challenges by providing free equipment, ice time, and coaching to Indigenous children aged 5-12. The program also focuses on teaching important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and resilience.

But beyond the physical benefits, the program also serves as a safe space for Indigenous children to connect with their culture and community. Many of the coaches and mentors are Indigenous themselves, providing positive role models for the children.

According to program coordinator, Jodi Hall, “This is Our Ice” is about more than just hockey. “It’s about creating a sense of belonging and pride for these kids,” she says.

The impact of the program has been significant. Children who were once shy and reserved have gained confidence and made new friends. Parents have also noticed positive changes in their children’s behavior and attitude.

For 10-year-old participant, Kaden, the program has been life-changing. “I feel like I belong here,” he says. “I’ve made so many friends and I’m learning so much about my culture.”

The success of “This is Our Ice” has led to the expansion of the program to other Indigenous communities in British Columbia. The Vancouver Canucks and the First Nations Health Authority hope to continue breaking barriers and promoting wellness through hockey for years to come.

In a time where reconciliation and inclusivity are at the forefront of discussions, “This is Our Ice” serves as a shining example of how sports can bring people together and create positive change.
