As wait times climb, Albertans opt for private MRIs and CT scans

As wait times for medical imaging services continue to increase in Alberta, more and more residents are turning to private clinics for MRIs and CT scans.

According to a recent report by the Canadian Institute for Health Information, the average wait time for an MRI in Alberta is 26 weeks, while the wait time for a CT scan is 7 weeks. This is significantly longer than the recommended wait times of 4 weeks for MRIs and 2 weeks for CT scans.

As a result, many Albertans are choosing to pay out of pocket for private MRIs and CT scans, which can cost anywhere from $500 to $2000. This option allows them to bypass the long wait times and receive their results much faster.

One private clinic in Calgary, Mayfair Diagnostics, has seen a significant increase in demand for their services. They have reported a 20% increase in MRI bookings and a 10% increase in CT scan bookings compared to last year.

Dr. David Koff, a radiologist at Mayfair Diagnostics, believes that the long wait times for public MRIs and CT scans are due to a lack of resources and funding. He also notes that the demand for these services is only going to increase as the population ages and the need for medical imaging grows.

However, not everyone can afford to pay for private scans. This creates a disparity in access to healthcare, as those who can afford it are able to receive timely and potentially life-saving diagnoses, while others are left waiting in pain and uncertainty.

The Alberta government has acknowledged the issue and has promised to invest $100 million over the next three years to reduce wait times for MRIs and CT scans. They have also announced plans to open two new public MRI clinics in Edmonton and Calgary.

In the meantime, private clinics continue to offer a solution for those who are able to pay for faster access to medical imaging. However, it is important to address the underlying issue of long wait times in the public system to ensure equal access to healthcare for all Albertans.
