WATCH: Suspects armed with hammers hit Markham jewelry store

Markham, ON – A jewelry store in Markham was targeted by suspects armed with hammers on Monday afternoon, causing chaos and destruction.

According to York Regional Police, the incident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. at a jewelry store located in the area of Highway 7 and Woodbine Avenue. Witnesses reported seeing four suspects enter the store, armed with hammers, and begin smashing display cases.

The suspects were able to grab a significant amount of jewelry before fleeing the scene in a black SUV. Police say they are still searching for the suspects and have not yet released any descriptions.

No injuries were reported, but the store sustained significant damage. Police are currently investigating the incident and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

This is not the first time this particular jewelry store has been targeted. In 2019, the same store was robbed by suspects armed with hammers as well. It is unclear at this time if the two incidents are connected.

The incident has left the community in shock and has raised concerns about the safety and security of businesses in the area. Some residents are calling for increased security measures, such as surveillance cameras and increased police presence, to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

In response to the incident, York Regional Police have increased patrols in the area and are urging business owners to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
