Shoppers at the Walmart in Kelowna were forced to evacuate the store on Tuesday afternoon after an irritant spray was discharged in the bathroom.

According to the Kelowna Fire Department, emergency crews were called to the store on Banks Road around 2:30 pm. The store was quickly evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Witnesses reported a strong chemical smell coming from the bathroom, causing some customers to experience difficulty breathing and eye irritation. The fire department confirmed that the irritant spray was discharged in the men’s bathroom.

The store was closed for approximately an hour while emergency crews investigated and ventilated the building. No injuries were reported, and the store has since reopened.

The Kelowna Fire Department is reminding the public to use caution when handling any type of irritant spray and to always follow the instructions on the label. They also advise individuals to seek medical attention if they experience any adverse reactions.

The incident is currently under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP.
