Shedd names newest otter pup Seldovia in nod to his origins

The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has announced the name of their newest otter pup, and it’s making a splash with visitors. The adorable pup, born on March 15, has been named “Kai,” which means “ocean” in Hawaiian.

The naming process began with a public vote on the aquarium’s website, where visitors could choose from a list of names inspired by the pup’s Hawaiian heritage. The options included “Kai,” “Nalu” (meaning “wave”), “Makani” (meaning “wind”), and “Koa” (meaning “warrior”).

After receiving over 10,000 votes, “Kai” emerged as the clear winner. The name not only reflects the pup’s Hawaiian roots, but also pays tribute to the otter’s natural habitat in the ocean.

“We are thrilled to announce that our newest otter pup has been named Kai,” said Peggy Sloan, the aquarium’s chief animal officer. “The name perfectly captures the spirit of this playful and curious little otter, and we can’t wait for our visitors to meet him.”

Kai’s birth is a significant milestone for the Shedd Aquarium, as it marks the first successful birth of a sea otter pup at the facility in over 20 years. The pup’s mother, Ellie, was rescued from the California coast in 2014 and has been a beloved member of the Shedd family ever since.

The aquarium’s animal care team has been closely monitoring Kai and Ellie since the pup’s birth, ensuring that both mother and baby are healthy and bonding well. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the adorable duo in the aquarium’s “Abbott Oceanarium” exhibit, where they can watch Kai learn to swim and play under the watchful eye of his doting mother.

The Shedd Aquarium is also using Kai’s arrival as an opportunity to educate visitors about the importance of conservation efforts for sea otters. These playful creatures were once on the brink of extinction due to hunting and habitat destruction, but thanks to conservation efforts, their population has slowly started to recover.

“We hope that Kai’s story will inspire our visitors to learn more about sea otters and the threats they face in the wild,” said Sloan. “By raising awareness and supporting conservation efforts, we can help ensure a brighter future for these amazing animals.”

Kai’s name has already become a hit with visitors, who have been flocking to the aquarium to catch a glimpse of the adorable pup. With his playful antics and charming personality, Kai is sure to continue winning the hearts of visitors for years to come.
