The Cameron Highlanders Regiment marched in a solemn and poignant tribute to the Battle of Vimy Ridge on Sunday.
Led by a piper playing the traditional lament “Flowers of the Forest,” the regiment marched through the streets of Ottawa, honoring the brave soldiers who fought and sacrificed their lives in the historic battle.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge, which took place on April 9, 1917, was a defining moment in Canadian history. It was the first time that all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together as one unit, and their success in capturing the heavily fortified ridge is considered a significant milestone in Canada’s journey towards nationhood.
The march, which began at the Cartier Square Drill Hall and ended at the National War Memorial, was a somber reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers who fought in the battle. The Cameron Highlanders Regiment, a reserve infantry unit based in Ottawa, has a special connection to the Battle of Vimy Ridge as many of its members are descendants of soldiers who fought in the battle.
