Kelowna expands Bikeep smart rack program

Kelowna, a city known for its beautiful landscapes and active lifestyle, is taking another step towards promoting sustainable transportation. The city has recently announced the expansion of its Bikeep smart rack program, which aims to make cycling more convenient and secure for its residents.

The Bikeep smart rack program was first introduced in Kelowna in 2019, with 20 racks installed in various locations throughout the city. These racks are equipped with advanced technology, including a locking mechanism that can only be unlocked with a registered user’s smartphone or a special key card. This ensures that bikes are securely stored and protected from theft.

The success of the initial 20 racks has prompted the city to expand the program, with an additional 30 racks set to be installed in high-traffic areas such as parks, shopping centers, and transit hubs. This will bring the total number of Bikeep racks in Kelowna to 50, making it one of the largest smart rack programs in Canada.

Mayor Colin Basran expressed his excitement for the expansion, stating that it aligns with the city’s goal of promoting sustainable transportation options. “We want to make it easier for people to choose cycling as a mode of transportation, and the Bikeep smart racks provide a safe and convenient option for cyclists,” he said.

The expansion of the Bikeep program is also a testament to the city’s commitment to creating a more bike-friendly community. With the addition of more racks, cyclists will have more options for secure bike parking, encouraging more people to choose cycling as a means of transportation.

The Bikeep smart racks are not only beneficial for cyclists but also for the city as a whole. By promoting cycling, the city is reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to a cleaner and greener environment. It also helps alleviate traffic congestion and promotes a healthier lifestyle for its residents.

The installation of the new racks is expected to be completed by the end of the summer, just in time for the peak cycling season. The city encourages residents to take advantage of this program and make use of the Bikeep racks for their cycling needs.

Kelowna’s expansion of the Bikeep smart rack program is a positive step towards creating a more sustainable and bike-friendly community. With the convenience and security provided by these racks, more people are encouraged to choose cycling as a mode of transportation, benefiting both individuals and the city as a whole.
