Calgarians can expect mosquitos to emerge ahead of May long weekend

Calgarians, get ready to swat away some pesky mosquitos ahead of the upcoming May long weekend. According to experts, these buzzing insects are expected to emerge earlier than usual this year.

The City of Calgary’s Pest Management team has been monitoring the mosquito population and has reported that the warm weather and recent rainfall have created ideal breeding conditions for these blood-sucking bugs.

In an interview with CTV News, City of Calgary Entomologist, Ken Black, explained that the early emergence of mosquitos is due to the mild winter and early spring we have experienced. He also mentioned that the city has already started its mosquito control program, which includes treating standing water and using larvicide to prevent the insects from hatching.

Black also advised Calgarians to take precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites, such as wearing long-sleeved clothing and using insect repellent. He also reminded residents to eliminate any standing water around their homes, as it serves as a breeding ground for mosquitos.

While mosquitos are known for being a nuisance, they can also carry diseases such as West Nile virus. The City of Calgary has reassured residents that they will continue to monitor the mosquito population and take necessary measures to control it.

In the meantime, Calgarians can expect to see an increase in mosquito activity in the coming weeks. So, be sure to stock up on bug spray and take necessary precautions to avoid getting bitten.

As we gear up for the May long weekend, let’s not forget to protect ourselves from these buzzing insects. Stay informed and stay safe, Calgary.
