Renewed Calls for Safety Measures After Pedestrian Struck on Notorious B.C. Road
A recent incident on a notorious road in British Columbia has once again sparked calls for increased safety measures. On Monday evening, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Highway 7 near the community of Agassiz. The victim, a 45-year-old man, was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
This is not the first time that this stretch of highway has been the site of a serious accident. In fact, it has gained a reputation for being a dangerous road for both drivers and pedestrians. In 2019, a 17-year-old girl was killed while trying to cross the highway. And just last month, a 25-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle in the same area.
Local residents and officials are now calling for immediate action to improve safety on this road. Mayor Sylvia Pranger of the District of Kent, where the highway is located, expressed her concern and frustration over the lack of progress in implementing safety measures. She stated, “It’s just a matter of time before another tragedy occurs if nothing is done.”
One of the main issues with this particular stretch of highway is the lack of proper pedestrian crossings. The nearest crosswalk is over a kilometer away, forcing pedestrians to take their chances crossing the busy road. This is especially concerning for students who attend the nearby Agassiz Christian School and have to cross the highway on a daily basis.
In response to the recent incident, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has stated that they are currently reviewing the safety of this road and will be implementing additional measures in the near future. However, many are calling for immediate action, such as the installation of a pedestrian overpass or additional crosswalks.
In the meantime, local residents are taking matters into their own hands by starting a petition to demand immediate safety improvements on this dangerous road. They are also urging drivers to slow down and be more cautious when driving through this area.
As the number of accidents and fatalities on this road continues to rise, it is clear that urgent action is needed to ensure the safety of both drivers and pedestrians. It is time for authorities to take these renewed calls for safety measures seriously and make the necessary changes to prevent any more tragedies from occurring.
