Surrey Gurdwara Commemorates One Year Since Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s Murder

The Sikh community in Surrey, British Columbia gathered at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara on Sunday to mark the one-year anniversary of the tragic murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Nijjar, a 32-year-old father of two, was shot and killed on May 1, 2020, while sitting in his car outside the gurdwara. The incident shocked and saddened the community, as Nijjar was known as a kind and devoted member of the gurdwara.

During the commemoration ceremony, community members and leaders paid tribute to Nijjar’s life and legacy. They shared memories of his generosity, compassion, and dedication to his faith and community.

Gurdwara president, Balbir Singh, spoke about the impact of Nijjar’s death on the community, stating, “We lost a brother, a friend, and a devoted member of our gurdwara. His absence is deeply felt by all of us.”

The ceremony also included prayers and hymns, as well as a moment of silence to honor Nijjar’s memory. Attendees were encouraged to reflect on the importance of unity and peace within the community, and to continue Nijjar’s legacy of service and kindness.

The investigation into Nijjar’s murder is ongoing, and no arrests have been made. However, the community remains hopeful that justice will be served and that Nijjar’s family will find closure.

In addition to the commemoration ceremony, the gurdwara also organized a blood donation drive in Nijjar’s honor. Nijjar was a regular blood donor, and the community wanted to continue his legacy of giving back to others.

The gurdwara also announced the establishment of a scholarship in Nijjar’s name, which will be awarded to a deserving student each year. This scholarship will serve as a lasting tribute to Nijjar’s commitment to education and community service.

As the community continues to mourn the loss of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, they also celebrate his life and the impact he had on those around him. The commemoration ceremony and other initiatives organized by the gurdwara serve as a reminder of the importance of coming together in times of tragedy and honoring the memory of those we have lost.
